SUMMARY:Partner event: Flynn Coleman – AI and Human Rights – Zurich
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to a presentation and networking event with Flynn Coleman—author, international human rights attorney, Fellow at Harvard and Yale, and professor—on the timely topic of AI and Human Rights.\nA true expert in the field, she has been named a Technology & Human Rights Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. She authored the book, A Human Algorithm, a groundbreaking narrative on the urgency of humanely designed AI and a guidebook to reimagining life in the era of intelligent technology. She is also a contributing writer for such publications as the Los Angeles Times, Foreign Policy, the Boston Globe, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Irish Times, Literary Hub, Tech Policy Press, the San Francisco Chronicle, HuffPost, Global Citizen, The Next Web, Darling Magazine, and Nautilus Magazine.\nFlynn has worked with the United Nations, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the UNHCR, the United States Federal Government, and with international companies, universities, and human rights organizations around the world.\nTo put it simply, Flynn has a profound understanding of this pressing subject matter, and we are honoured to have her join us for a conversation.\nThis event is organised by SFS (Scandinavian Forum Switzerland) , and in collaboration with EF Education First, SSCC, Norgesklubben and  SWEA (The Swedish Women’s Educational Association).\nProgramme\n18.30 – 19.00 Registration & reception\n19.00 – 20.00 Fireside chat with Flynn Coleman, moderated by Prof. Andreas Diedrich, University of Gothenburg\n20.00 – 20.30 Q&A\n20.30 – 22.00 Apéro dînatoire, interactive “AI4Good” presentations, and book-signing\nAI4Good: Interactive presentations\nDavid Alonso del Barrio and AI4Media\nResearch Engineer at the Idiap Research Institute\nDavid Alonso del Barrio is a Spanish Telecommunications Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. He did his second year of his Master’s degree at the Computer Science section of the EPFL, where he started his career in the world of Artificial Intelligence. Currently, he is a Research Engineer at the Idiap Research Institute in Martigny, Switzerland. He is a member of the Social Computing Group led by Prof. Daniel Gatica-Perez of EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne), where his passion for applying technical knowledge to societal challenges has driven his work.\nOver the past 2 years, David has been actively involved in the European project AI4Media, a pioneering initiative focused on the application of AI techniques in the context of European newspapers. Within this project, he has contributed to several publications exploring the intersection of AI and media.\nDavid’s presentation at the event will delve into the intriguing concept of frame analysis. In simple terms, this technique involves identifying the perspective from which journalists approach a given topic, such as a moral or economic approach or one that emphasises a conflict, or approaching a topic from a more emotional angle by humanising the subject or attributing responsibility for the problem or solution to a person or institution. David will illuminate how cutting-edge language models, such as LLM (Large Language Models), can play a pivotal role in enhancing this identification process, shedding light on the nuances that might be missed otherwise.\nHis work underscores the potential for AI to make meaningful contributions to our understanding of how information is framed in news reporting, with the aim of exploring new techniques in the identification of bias in the news.\nFees\nCHF 50 for SSCC Members\nCHF 90 for Non-Members\nCHF 25 for University Students\nRSVP\nTuesday 31 October 2023\nWelcome!\nOrganised by\nIn collaboration with\nTerms & Conditions\nFor event registrations our general policy is that refunds will only be issued for cancellations occurring 3 days or more prior to the event start date.
